For young Washingtonians, Dewey Beach, Delaware is a legendary place to get away from the city and get away with being ridiculous. If you experienced Panama City Beach spring break in 2001, then you know what I’m talking about. The heart of Dewey is a place where the beer flows like wine, where ex-frat daddies instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called Starboard.

Can you hang?
It’s a warm 90 degrees and smoking hot young professionals surround you. Don’t worry; a seemingly endless supply of frothy Orange Crushes will keep your head in the game, at least until nap time. “Is there really a beach in Dewey,” you wonder. Watch out! Your friend almost got “sharked” by that guy they call The Heat, a Dewey connoisseur.
T
he real deal.
The Dewey party scene is good fun when you’re a 21 year old intern from The Hill – or in search of one. But there’s another side to this beach town. Yes, there really is a beach in Dewey!
An early Sunday morning walk on the shoreline just steps from Starboard reveals the flip-side: meditating yogis, volleyball, families with young kids, surfers, paddle-boarders and puppies frolicking in the sand.
Moral of this story?
Don’t judge a beach by its reputation alone. Even if your wild shenanigans days are behind you, Dewey could be a nice weekend getaway.
